Known as the gateway to Orange County, Seal Beach, is a sleepy little ocean front town located on the northern border of Orange County with a population today of about 24,295. The town itself was once even more prominent a tourist attraction then Huntington Beach when Henry Huntington brought the railway to Seal Beach. In the early 1920´s gambling and inexpensive amusement parks were all people could afford during the Great Depression. The electric railways were removed and permanent homes were established in the area. The city was able to receive royalties from an off shore drilling station. This boosted the economy and allowed the city to pave roads and create recreational facilities. The population had grown to over 6,000 in the 1960´s with subdivisions, and newly built Leisure World. This was the first gated retirement community of its kind in the United States. This is an impressive community of seniors with over 9,000 residents. You may also be interested to note some seniors in the area have taken advantage of the reverse mortgage option that is explained further within my website.
The small town atmosphere is still hailed today. You can walk the main street and find unique shops locally owned and smell the salt air in the breeze. The joining of Surfside to Seal Beach also brought population growth. Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station holds approximately 2/3 of the land within the city limits. They provide weapons storage and support to the United States Pacific Fleets. They erected a World War II Submarine Memorial for the men lost in battle through submarines attacks and it can be viewed daily free of charge. It is located on Seal Beach Blvd. and Forestall Avenue. Boeing is also located here and is one of the top employers of the area.
If you are truly interested in the history of Seal Beach there is an old Pacific Electric car re-modeled into a museum of sorts called Red Car Museum. The car was originally built in 1925 and has a wide variety of photographs, seashells and other memorabilia for the history buff in your family. It is located at Electric Avenue next to The Mary Wilson Library. On the north side of Pacific Coast Highway are quaint tree lined neighborhoods perfect for any family. The median household income was $42,079 from the 1999 census. With about 14,267 housing units and about half of those are owner occupied. The median age in Seal Beach is 54.
Seal Beach is part of the Los Alamitos Unified School District. The district currently has 8 Blue Ribbon honored schools including Los Alamitos High School. They are also proud of the many California Distinguished Schools in the district. You may access their report cards, test scores, and attendance boundaries on there site. The California State University of Long Beach is the closest four year college in the area and is known locally for its top teaching programs. Long Beach City College is also quite close and offers a Liberal Arts campus as well as a Pacific Coast campus.
The town is also host to sand castle contest, arts and craft fairs, and occasionally film and television productions. Ruby´s Diner sits at the end of the second longest Pier in California and has ample views of the vast ocean with intermittent sightings of Hump Back Whales. The active military base also has set aside a portion of wetlands for the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge. Although this sight is restricted due to the Active status of the base, you can learn about the types of birds and animals that call this sanctuary home. The city also offers access from Huntington Harbor to the Pacific Ocean with there Anaheim Bay and Alamitos Bay and the mouth of the San Gabriel River. Surfers find the "Ray Bay" quite enjoyable as long as you can dodge the sting rays that seem to gravitate towards the warm water there.
You may certainly contact our office if you find Seal Beach a possibility for your future investment property or home. I have listings I can show you and would be happy to meet with you and have you consider some of the fine homes in this area.
